Statement A:

“Contrary to some media reports, social media activity and subsequent public perception, Dr. Hawkins’ administrative leave resulted from theological statements that seemed inconsistent with Wheaton College’s doctrinal convictions, and is in no way related to her race, gender or commitment to wear a hijab during Advent,” Wheaton president Philip Ryken said in a statement released on Wednesday.

Statement B:

The school said that it rejects religious prejudice and believes strongly in the freedom of expression of religion.

As Empires Collapse they eat themselves…

As empires collapse, they turn inward, and subject their own populations to the same ill treatment to which they subjected others. Here, America is unexceptional: the number of Americans being murdered by their own police, with minimal repercussions for those doing the killing, is quite stunning. When Americans wonder who their enemy really is, they need look no further.

If everything is ‘robust’ and ‘novel’, then there is no distinction.

If everything is ‘robust’ and ‘novel’, then there is no distinction. In that case, words used to describe scientific results are no longer driven by the content but rather by marketability. We think this changing attitude/culture is problematic for the credibility of science. We did not measure real scientific progress (it is even debatable whether this is possible), but it seems unlikely that the 900% increase in positive words is realistic and reflects true progress in science. Experiments fail and have failed regularly and results are not always clear (but you still have to write them down). If the language increasingly diverges from the actual results, quid est veritas?

Who gets to decide your identity?

December 13, 2015 § Leave a comment

You or others?

My identity, my business, my decision. At a more profound level, no one other than the individual has a “dog in the fight”. What I call myself effects you [either individually or as a group] not at all.

Race isn’t a physical fact but a socially constructed “fact”. Agree it can have dire real world consequences.

I’d be a “Jeffersonian” on this point by flipping this thought around a bit.

But it does me no injury for my neighbor to say there are twenty gods or no God. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg.

-Thomas Jefferson, Notes on Virginia, 1782

But it does no injury to  my neighbor for Rachel to say she is black. It neither picks their pocket nor breaks their leg.

Is someone’s identity an “electoral” decision allowing for vote by disinterested parties?
